A Picture's Worth at Thousand Words

We don't like to blow our own horn, but we would like to share a bit of our success with you. We aren't the biggest retreiver training facility, but we strive every day to be the best we can...and to do the best we can for YOUR dog, whether he is a Personal Gun Dog, or a Family Pet. It takes a lot of blind faith to bring your dog to people you don't know. Rest assured that we are regular folks who love their dogs, just like you. Call or email us to make an appointment to meet us and see our facility. We would love to welcome you into the Leatherwood Kennels family.

Our Home Training Property is approximately fifty acres of land groomed for Retriever Training. We have areas for Obedience, Force Fetch, Three-Handed Cast, T, Swim By, and Pattern/Line Blinds. We have four excellent areas that we utilize for young dog marks near the kennel. We have three ponds on site. Our Big Pond has plenty of Technical elements that we use to teach the dogs water and land entry, decheating and parallel shore retrieves. Our Swim By Pond also is used for teaching Angle Entry and Decheating. The Tobacco Barn Pond is excellent for young and older dogs alike. It is perfect to build confidence in a pup and to keep an older dog honest with parallel shore retrieves. we use all of our grounds in addition to several properties which are less than an hour away from Home.

Our Training Program is customized for your Dog. We begin with Basic Obedience and teach 'Sit' / 'Here'/ 'Heel', then Collar-Condition him to these commands. For a Family Pet, we fine-tune these commands until he is off-lead. We teach Basic Obedience for all breeds. For Personal Gun Dogs, we begin Force Fetch once they are Collar Conditioned. From there, we move onto Walking Fetch and teach them to Deliver to Hand. At this point, you would have a Started Dog. Depending upon what level you to which you would like your dog trained, The Training proceeds next to Three-Handed Casting, the 'T', Swim-By, Pattern Blinds, Decheating and Cold Blinds.
